Consolidated's Cat

Description

The Consolidated PBY Catalina was an American flying boat, and later an amphibious aircraft of the 1930s and 1940s produced by Consolidated Aircraft. It was one of the most widely used seaplanes of World War II. Catalinas served with every branch of the United States Armed Forces and in the air forces and navies of many other nations.

During World War II, PBYs were used in anti-submarine warfarepatrol bombingconvoy escortssearch and rescue missions (especially air-sea rescue), and cargo transport. The PBY was the most numerous aircraft of its kind and the last active military PBYs were not retired from service until the 1980s. In 2014, nearly 80 years after its first flight, the aircraft continues to fly as a waterbomber (or airtanker) in aerial firefighting operations all over the world.

I frankly have no idea how long this piece took. What I can do is estimate the time I took to draw the outlines, which is about 3 hours tops.
I was very hesitant and cautious about applying colors to the pencil drawing, since coloring is usually out of my league and is something I'm not good enough at. I almost stopped midway, saying that I ruined it already and it can't be fixed. But a certain someone encouraged me to continue and looking back, I'm glad I did.

Hmmm, what shall I add. Oh yes. Technical details.
The pic shows a Consolidated PBY-5A "Catalina" flying boat of the US Navy. It's currently taking off (but I was too lazy to add background :P) and is carrying a load of four bombs under it's wings for anti-shipping operations in the Pacific. I took the liberty of changing the -5A model's flat-topped and unarmed turret with the -6 model's "bulged" topped and armed with 2 nose guns on a flexible mount, just because it looks cooler.

There's a lot of minute details which are wrong, but I decided to leave it out untouched (for now). I used a very standard Stabilo Swans 24pcs color pencil set on an A3 sized drawing paper. Image has been cropped to make it more visually appealing. Also, I don't have a scanner which could fit the drawing, so I captured it on the Lumia 710 phone camera. Cuz I'm cheap!
